Henry Cockburn is an artist and the co-author of the bestselling book Henry’s Demons: A Father and Son’s Journey Out of Madness, which describes his experiences in psychiatric hospitals.

Born in London on 4 January 1982, he grew up in Canterbury but also spent time in Moscow and Washington. While studying at The King’s School, Canterbury, he won the Pfizer Award for young artists in 1999, later attending Wimbledon College of Arts and Brighton University.

In 2002, while at Brighton, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and subsequently spent eight years in psychiatric institutions. He continued to paint during this time, and in 2008, he published an account of his experiences in The Independent. This article became the basis for Henry’s Demons, which he co-wrote with his father, Patrick Cockburn, and published in 2011. Highly praised by reviewers in both the UK and the US, the book was shortlisted for the Costa Book Award and adapted as a radio play on BBC Radio 4.

Henry was discharged from hospital in 2011 and now lives in Canterbury, Kent, where he completed a BA in Fine Art at the University for the Creative Arts in 2016.
