Gabriel Mansfield

Gabriel Mansfield (b. 1992) is a contemporary British artist and instructor at the Royal College of Art. After graduating with a BA (Hons) from Goldsmiths, University of London, and an MA in Sculpture from the RCA, Mansfield balanced his studio work with distinguished teaching roles, including serving as Lecturer in Fine Art at The University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury.

This collection of original paintings is the culmination of Mansfield’s year-long residency at Kingswood School in Bath. Devised as a counter-response to rigid institutional curriculums, the series aims to encourage playful, creative thinking and free interpretation. Inspired by a childhood act of misinterpretation, where he saw a parrot in Wassily Kandinsky’s Landscape with Red Spot No. 2, Mansfield’s paintings explore the psychology of visual perception, drawing upon free association, pareidolia, and artistic automatism to interrogate ways of seeing. Rather than starting with a preconceived concept, Mansfield produces uninhibited “daydream-like” freehand drawings, allowing shapes and subtle narratives to emerge organically. Escaping the rigid constraints of literal illustration, this spontaneous, fluid approach results in a visual playground where both the artist and the viewer's subconscious minds can freely wander.

Reproducing the 52 paintings in the form of a limited-edition deck of cards, Mansfield transformed the series into an interactive game designed for spontaneous storytelling. The sale of each painting will be accompanied by a complete signed and numbered deck.
