Tim Bates

Tim Bates is an accomplished, internationally collected ceramic sculptor who balanced a thirteen-year teaching career in the United Kingdom alongside the development of his own creative practice. Having relocated to France in 2009, he regularly crossed the English Channel to maintain his dual professional ties before permanently settling on the Continent. His unique architectural ceramics have achieved considerable commercial and critical success, earning a major commission for a prominent London hotel and finding their way into discerning private art collections stretching from Iceland to the United States. From his studio in Brittany, Bates focuses on refining and re-establishing his technical processes to push his medium into larger, bolder, and more structurally complex territories.

Influenced heavily by architectural styles such as Brutalism and Modernism, Bates hand builds elegant, minimalist ceramic works, often accentuated by lighting. While a selection of his pieces draw direct inspiration from specific, real-world historical buildings, other compositions creatively deconstruct and reassemble general architectural elements into completely anonymous forms. He also creates works that omit the lighting element entirely to exist purely as abstract, independent sculptures. To achieve his signature aesthetic, Bates uses a variety of rough, grogged clay bodies chosen specifically for their raw, highly textured finishes. He frequently juxtaposes this coarse material with fine, delicate details, embellishing his final fired pieces with pure gold leaf or screen-printed schematic imagery derived from modernist architectural blueprints.
